Jerzy Nowosielski Biography
(b Kraków, 7 Jan 1923). Polish painter. During World War II he attended the Art Institute in Kraków, and he began to study painting in the studio of Eugeniusz Eibisch at the Academy of Fine Arts, Kraków, in 19457. He was a member of the Kraków group. In 195762, Nowosielski lectured at the Academy of Fine Arts, Kraków. He took part in many exhibitions at home and abroad (including the Venice Biennale of 1956, the São Paulo Biennale of 1959 and at the Guggenheim Museum, New York, in 1960). After his visit to the Lvov (now Lviv) Icon Museum in 1942, Nowosielskis work fell under the definite influence of icon painting. Even in the short periods during which he produced abstract paintings (e.g. the late 1940s, or late 1950s and early 1960s), his works are influenced by the colour, use of space and inherent mystical concepts of the icon.
