Akbar Padamsee Biography
(b Mumbai, India 1928) Indian painter. Akbar Padamsee studied at the Sir J.J. School of Art in Mumbai from 1945 to 1949 and received his diploma in Fine Arts. In 1951 he moved to Paris where he continued to live and paint until 1967. Padamsee is known for his abstracted landscapes, which he calls “metascapes” (mirror images) and for his figurative depictions of isolated humans. His work has been widely exhibited across the world, including major shows in Mumbai and Delhi; and at the Venice and Tokyo Biennales. Padamsee has been the recipient of several prestigious awards including the Rockefeller Fund Fellowship in 1965. Today, Padamsee lives and works in Mumbai.
