Biography

(b London, Upper Canada 1860; d Paris, France 1892). Canadian painter. In 1877 Paul Peel moved to the United States to study at the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts under the renowned Thomas Eakins. In 1881, Peel moved to Paris to attend the Ecole des Beaux-Arts where Jean-Léon Gérôme was one of his mentors. It was at the Ecole that Peel learned his scientific, naturalistic mode of depiction.
