Paul Peel Biography
(b London, Upper Canada 1860; d Paris, France 1892). Canadian painter. In 1877 Paul Peel moved to the United States to study at the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts under the renowned Thomas Eakins. In 1881, Peel moved to Paris to attend the Ecole des Beaux-Arts where Jean-Léon Gérôme was one of his mentors. It was at the Ecole that Peel learned his scientific, naturalistic mode of depiction. He was so adept at the Academic style that he was awarded a medal, in 1890, from the Salon for After the Bath. The painting exemplifies what Peel is most well-known for, his careful depictions of children. Peel is also recognized as being one the first Canadian artists to paint nudes. He died at the age of thirty two after suffering from what was likely a lung infection.
