Jane Peterson Biography

Jane Peterson was born in Elgin, Illinois and originally named Jennie Christine. As she matured she changed her name in 1909 to Jane Peterson -- this with her initial success as an artist. She began drawing from nature and had art lessons in the Elgin Public Schools. But in 1895 she traveled to New York City to study art at the Pratt Institute from which she graduated in 1901. For a time she became the Drawing Supervisor of the Brooklyn Public Schools while studying oil painting with Frank Vincent Dumond. After saving enough money, she traveled abroad to study painting with Frank Brangwyn in London, Jacques Emile Blanche and Andre Hotel in Paris and the famous painter Joaquin Sorolla in Madrid. From this experience, Peterson developed a lively and distinguished personal style in her painting that combined elements of Impressionism and other current artistic movements. Her drawing was powerful and bold . Her colors were vivid and luminous. She traveled in company of such artists as Sorella, John Singer Sargent, Louis Comfort Tiffany, Childe Hassam and Maurice Prendergast and held her own in the process. By 1925, Peterson was characterized in The New York Times as “one of the foremost women painters in New York.” By 1965, at the time of her death she had produced more than eighty one-woman exhibitions with images depicting views of Florida, Paris, Istanbul, New York, Venice, as well as Gloucester and Cape Anne. She had become especially well known for her floral still life paintings unmatched by any other New Englander– a much admired artist who lived in Ipswich.
