The current highest auction record for a painting by Petitjean in a similar format is about €9,000Condition:The painting is in a good condition according to age. The paper has been laid to cardboard, which has been covered with canvas on the reverse. The paint surface is slightly darkened and minimally stained and craqueled. The varnish has been renewed. The inspection with the naked eye and under UV light reveals minor strokes of retouching to the margins. Moreover, there are framing marks and minor losses. The frame is slightly chipped and shows remnants of gilding. The dimensions are 25 x 37 cm, while the frame measures 39 x 51.5 cm.Edmond Marie Petitjean (1844-1925)Edmond Marie Petitjean exhibited for the first time at the Paris Salon des Artistes Francais in 1874. Around to 1886, he lived in Dordrecht. Besides his paintings he created humorous drawings for various magazines, such as ‘Le Frou-Frou’ and ‘L'Assiette au beurre’. Works by Petitjean are in major museum collections, including the Musée d'Orsay and the Louvre in Paris, the Art Museums of Marseille, Lille, Bordeaux, Dijon, and the Hermitage in St. Petersburg.
