Lot 69: MAX PONTY (1904-1972). PEUGEOT. Circa 1930. 47x31 inches, 119x80 cm.

Estimated Price: Log in or create account to view price data

Description: MAX PONTY (1904-1972) PEUGEOT. Circa 1930. 47x31 1/2 inches, 119 1/2x80 cm. Condition A-: minor restoration in image. Ponty's most memorable contribution to the world of graphic arts was the Gitanes cigarette package, which he designed in 1947. By that time he already had a long and distinguished career behind him. He spent seven years working for Draeger, the Parisian printer, and then opened his own studio where he handled steady commissions for prominent clients like Galeries Lafayette, Radiola and Peugeot, as well as designing travel posters. His style is very typical of the French Art Deco school, relying heavily on the use of the airbrush. Here, he introduces photography into the design, which was certainly in vogue at the time, but not something he often worked with.

Description: 47x31 inches. His style is very typical of the French Art Deco school, relying heavily on the use of the airbrush. In this poster for Peugeot motorcycles, he timorously introduces photography into the design, another characteristic of French designers in those days, but not something he often worked with. The image is good and dynamic despite this unexplored medium, playing with blue, white and red. Separated by an "s"-shaped curve, he displays the engine at full speed with the photograph of the bike beneath it.

Lot 87: POSTER: MAX PONTY (1904-1972) RADIOLA. 1928. 61x45 inches. Hachard & Cie.

Estimated Price: Log in or create account to view price data

Description: MAX PONTY (1904-1972) RADIOLA. 1928. 61 1/2x45 1/4 inches. Hachard & Cie. Condition B+: overpainting in top right image and margins; repaired tears and creases in margins and image; vertical and horizontal folds. Framed. Max Ponty trained for seven years in the Draeger printing studio. By the mid twenties he had left and was designing posters under his own name. He worked for big clients like Peugeot (see Swann Modernist Poster Auction # 2006, lot 49), the Paquet Navigation Company, and for the travel and tourism industries. For all of his work, however, he is best remembered for his award-winning design for the packaging of Gitannes cigarettes, which has remained unchanged since he won in 1947. This poster for a brand of radio is absolutely remarkable. The brand name itself is literally broadcast against a rich, cloudy sky, and the bright lettering suggests the clarity of sound the radio itself can achieve. The photography of the broadcasting tower and the sky have been retouched with color for extra effect, while the image of the tower reflects the strength, technology and modernity of the broadcasting industry. Very few designers in France used photography in their work during these years. Extremely rare.

Lot 241: MAX PONTY

Estimated Price: Log in or create account to view price data

Description: CIE. DE NAVIGATION PAQUET / MARECHAL LYAUTEY.41x29 inches. Hachard, Paris.Condition B+: paper loss and creases in right margin; minor creases in image. Framed. The Marechal Lyautey was built in the 1930s, and named after the conqueror of Morocco. The packet ships were used to carry cargo and mail with some room for passengers, and generally serviced the smaller ports which the large liners never reached. She, and her sister ships Djenne and Koutobia were in the service of the Compagnie de Navigation Paquet, sailing to destinations in Africa and the East. She was the first ship in the company "to be fitted with a twin propeller. From 1924-1939 she sailed between Marseille and Tangiers and occasionally further south to Casablanca, Dakar and the Canary Isles" (Orientalist p. 13). Cassandre's influence on this poster cannot be overlooked, but despite graphic similarities to the Normandie and Atlantique, this ship itself was far less glamorous than the poster implies. Orientalist p. 13.
