Antonio Ramalho Biography
(b barqueiros, alto douro, 13 nov 1858; d figueira da foz, 1916). portuguese painter. he played a significant role in the establishment of naturalistic painting in portugal, being mainly distinguished as a portrait painter. in 1879 he completed a course at the academia de belas-artes, lisbon. the next year he exhibited for the first time, together with columbano bordalo pinheiro, and then left for paris with support from the conde da praia. here he frequented the studio of alexandre cabanel at the académie julian until 1884. at the 1883 salon de paris he exhibited the chez mon voisin (1883; lisbon, priv. col., see paris, exh. cat., 19878, p. 243), which depicts in minute detail a lamp makers workshop, capturing effects of light with a spontaneity characteristic of his work at this time. the lady in black (1884; lisbon, casa mus. gonçalves), also painted in paris, displays a worldly grace in its spontaneous pose and the black dress that recalls manet. between 1882 and 1883 ramalho also became interested in landscapes, although his views of the seine are less successful. at the same time he was a co-founder of the grupo do leão in lisbon, exhibiting landscapes in the grupos salon between 1881 and 1889.
