Jerg Ratgeb Biography
(b c . 1480; d Pforzheim, 1526). German painter. He lived in Stuttgart until 1509, when he moved with his family to Heilbronn, having been granted permission to work there for three years. He failed to obtain citizenship of Heilbronn because his wife and children were serfs of the Duke of Württemberg, who would not free them. In 1512 he was refused permission to stay in Heilbronn another three years because of this but was finally allowed on appeal to remain one more year (c . 151213) to complete work already begun there. The only surviving signed and dated work from this activity in Heilbronn is the painted altarpiece of St Barbara (1510; Schwaigern, nr Heilbronn, Stadtkirche). The central panel of the triptych depicts her Martyrdom and other scenes from her life. The wings show scenes from the lives of St Mary Magdalen and St Paul on the interior, and the Parting of the Apostles on the exterior.
