Description: Carnations, roses, tulips, morning glory and other flowers in a glass bowl, with glass bottles, and a bronze plate resting on a silver cup on a marble ledge signed with initials 'G. R.' (on the rim of the plate) oil on canvas 281/2 x 381/2 in. (72.4 x 97.8 cm.) NOTES Giuseppe was the son of the Neapolitan painter Giacomo Recco, the first in a small dynasty of artists who specialised exclusively in still life painting. He began in the tradition of his father and (probable) uncle, Giovan Battista, executing naturalistic arrangements of flowers, fish, game and kitchen scenes. Later he moved towards a more Baroque and decorative style that suggests the influence of Abraham Breughel and Giuseppe Battista Ruoppolo. Giuseppe Recco's art is characterised by the intensity with which he observes light and surface texture and by the clarity of the composition, based on a careful balance of verticals and horizontals. Recco was summoned to Spain by King Charles II and died shortly after his arrival.

GIUSEPPE RECCO NAPLES 1634 - 1695 ALICANTE

Estimated Price: Log in or create account to view price data

Description: PROPERTY FROM A SPANISH PRIVATE COLLECTION STILL LIFE OF SALT WATER FISH WITH KITCHEN VESSELS, GUARDED BY A CAT;STILL LIFE OF SALT WATER FISH AND SQUID IN A LANDSCAPESTILL LIFE OF SALT WATER FISH WITH KITCHEN VESSELS, GUARDED BY A CAT;STILL LIFE OF SALT WATER FISH AND SQUID IN A LANDSCAPEmeasurements noteeach: 71.2 by 96 cm.; 28 by 37 3/4 in.a pair, the former signed lower centre: Gius Reccoboth oil on canvas, unlined, in carved and gilt wood framesQuantity: 2PROVENANCEPossibly in the collection of Don Miguel Martinez de Pinillos y Saenz de Velasco during the early 19th century, but probably acquired by his son Don Antonio Martinez de Pinillos (1865 - 1923), Cadiz; By direct descent to his daughter Doña Carmen Martinez de Pinillos, Cadiz;Thence by family descent to the present owners. NOTEGiuseppe Recco was born in 1634 into an important family of Neapolitan still life painters. His style evolved from the tradition of his father, Giacomo Recco, and his uncle Giovan Battista Recco, both of whose reputations he eclipsed, establishing his position as the most important Neapolitan still life painter during the second half of the 17th century. His oeuvre consists principally of still lifes of fish, fruit, flowers and kitchen scenes, which towards the latter part of his career take on a more baroque grandeur, such as his impressive pair of flower paintings at Burghley House, England. The present works reveal Recco's remarkable ability to instill a sense of reality and movement to his nature morte. The artist's distinctive highlights, applied with an almost pointillist technique, capture the fall of light on the irregular surface of the fishes scales and the complex configurations of fish are further animated by the interspersal of red mullet with the darker species. This life-like depiction of the fish reaches its most vivid point in the fish precariously balanced on the edge of the ledge, which seemingly protrudes from the picture plane into the space of the unsuspecting beholder. Whether the juxtaposition of the setting of the two scenes has any deliberate significance is unclear. Perhaps the pendants are designed to contrast the fruits of the sea in a natural setting with their subsequent removal to a domestic interior with pots and pans, including a brass ewer which must have been a studio prop of the artist's, recurring as it does in a number of his other still lifes, such as that listed by Salerno as in a private collection1. In addition to the domestic demand for his still lifes, Recco's work was highly prized within Spain, which resulted in his summoning in 1694 by King Charles II to Madrid, although he died shortly after his arrival at the port of Alicante.1. L. Salerno, Still Life Painting in Italy, Rome 1984, p. 215, no. 52.4, reproduced.

Estimated Price: Log in or create account to view price data

Description: STILL LIFE WITH FISHmeasurements note37 1/8 by 48 in.; 94.3 by 122 cm.signed with initials center right G.R.oil on canvasNOTEGiuseppe Recco, son of the painter Giacomo Recco, was one of the most famed Neapolitan still-life painter of his time. The present picture is an excellent early example of the painter's achievements in kitchen scenes, which he favored throughout his first period of artistic maturity. Perhaps the most startling visual quality of this picture lies in the artist's observation and representation of light and surface texture, which are characterized by sharp contrasts created by strong highlights. For example, the glistening fish's skins are treated radically differently from the smooth polished surface of the copper kettle standing behind the fish on the left. Recco delighted in these types of contrasting textures, and included comparable examples in a number of compositions. For example, A Still Ife of Fish, dated 1650 and currently preserved in the Bredius Museum in the Netherlands, displays similar features.
