Pierre-Auguste Renoir Biography
(b. February 25, 1841, Limoges, France; d. December 3, 1919, Cagnes, France) French painter. When Renoir was three, his family moved to Paris where his father made a living as a tailor. As a young boy Renoir attended school, but left in 1854 to apprentice at porcelain painting studio. After the studio went bankrupt in 1858, Renoir worked odd jobs and decided to become a painter, getting permission in 1860 to study in the Louvre, where he copied Rococo masters. In 1862, Renoir entered the studio of the Swiss artist Marc-Gabriel-Charles Gleyre, where he met Claude Monet, Alfred Sisley and Frederic Bazille. Renoir also enrolled at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts in 1862. In 1863, Renoir had his first painting accepted at the Salon and continued to submit and show at the Salon for years. Renoir became a leading member of the group of Impressionists, the core of which was formed around 1863. They often met at the Café Guerbois and Renoir was considered by many to be the best portrait painter of the Impressionist circle. In 1869, Renoir worked at La Grenouillere, on the Seine near Bougival, with Monet and the two executed what are considered to be the first Impressionist landscape paintings. Around 1872, Renoir moved into a studio at 74 rue Saint-Georges in Paris where he painted for many years and produced his famous scenes of Parisian life. In April of 1874, Renoir displayed seven works in the famous first Impressionist exhibit, at 35 Boulevard des Capucines, an exhibition free from the constraint of judges. After this exhibition, Renoir began to receive commissions for his work and exhibited 19 works in the second Impressionist exhibition in April of 1876. Renoir struggled early in his career, but in the late 1870s began to achieve success as a portraitist and sold much of his work through dealer Paul Durand-Ruel. Renoir met Aline Carigot in early 1880 and married her in 1890, after the two already had children together. In 1882, Renoir worked with Cezanne at his home in Aix-en-Provence. Though he embraced the Impressionist style for much of his career, in his later works of the 1880s onward, as a result of traveling and being exposed to Renaissance works, Renoir began to reject the Impressionist style and strove for a greater sense of unity; with more structure and tighter lines in his painting. Leaving the contemporary subjects of the Impressionists behind, Renoir began to depict more simple, traditional and timeless subjects, including nudes. Around 1884, Renoir left his studio on the Rue Saint-Georges and settled into his increasingly bourgeois life; depicting domestic and family scenes, especially favoring the woman in the life. By 1886, Renoir’s separation from the Impressionist group was complete when he did not exhibit in the group’s final show, mistrusting newer artists such as Gauguin. In the later part of his life, Renoir suffered from rheumatism and moved to a warmer climate in the south of France, but continued to paint until a heart attack caused his death in 1919.
