Hermann Scherer Biography
(b Rümmingen, Baden-Württemberg, 8 Feb 1893; d Basle, 13 May 1927). German sculptor, painter and printmaker, active in Switzerland. After serving an apprenticeship as a stonemason and working as journeyman, in 1914 he settled in Basle. There he soon made friends with other young artists who had also trained as craftsmen, including Albert Müller (18971926), with whom he remained close until 1925. From 1918 to 1921 Scherer worked as an assistant to the Swiss sculptor Carl Burckhardt (18781923) on the latters classicist fountain sculptures for the forecourt of the Badischer Bahnhof in Basle.
