Stefan Schwartz Biography
(b Nyitra [now Nitra, Slovakia], 20 Aug 1851; d Raabs, Austria, 31 July 1924). Austrian sculptor and medallist. He studied drawing in Budapest from the age of 14 and was then employed there by a cousin who made silverware. Schwartz thus acquired a fundamental knowledge of working and treating metal. In 1867 he went to Vienna and joined the renowned bronze and silver manufacturers Dziedzinski & Hanusch and Klinkosch, where he soon became established as a specialist in fine chasing. In 1870 he started to study at the Kunstgewerbeschule in Vienna under the sculptor Otto König (18381920), soon coming to outshine König in the field of small-scale statuary. In 1871 Schwartz opened a private studio in Vienna, although he remained close to the Kunstgewerbeschule where, in 1884, he was appointed a professor.
