Rudolf Schwarzkogler Biography

(b Vienna, 13 Nov 1940; d Vienna, 20 June 1969). Austrian performance artist. He studied in 1957–61 at the Graphische Lehr-und Versuchanstalt in Vienna, where he was a contemporary of Heinz Cibulka and Hermann Nitsch. After a brief period at the Hochschule für Angewandte Kunst in Vienna his work was interrupted by military service in 1962–3. During this period he developed an interest in the Viennese tradition of Albert Paris von Gütersloh, Kokoschka and Schiele as well as in the work of Arnulf Rainer and Yves Klein. This dichotomy between a contemplative art and one expressive of inner states through the image of the body was to colour his development, and was reinforced by his readings of Antonin Artaud and the French Symbolists.
