Frederic Soulacroix, (French, 1858-1933),

Estimate: $20,000 - $40,000

Description: Frederic Soulacroix (French, 1858-1933) "Afternoon Tea for Three" oil on canvas signed lower right. Presented in a gilded frame. 39-1/2" x 30" Provenance: Private collection, Birmingham, Alabama; Thence by descent. Notes: Frederic (Joseph, Pierre, Timothee) Soulacroix was born into a prominent artistic family. His father, a talented French sculptor and painter, married Italian fresco painter Giancinta Diofebo, with whom he collaborated on several fresco commissions. The talented young Soulacroix entered the Accademia di Belle Arti in Florence in 1873 and was later accepted into its prestigious School of Painting where he was exposed to romantic genre painting. The painting offered here is a fine example of his mature work that from the late 1870s represents a unique mixture of Rococo subject matter (courting couples and frivolous tea parties in gardens and parlors) and Neo-Classical draftsmanship within Empire-style settings. The sumptuous parlor and the three young debutantes engaged in teatime chatter are formed through strong compositional outlines and polished surfaces. The verisimilitude of the silk and satin gowns, the crisp lines of the curtained door, and upholstered fabrics are a testament to Soulacroix's virtuoso in depicting the fineries of late 18th-/early 19th-century costume pieces and decor. Soulacroix had a prodigious career with well-to-do patrons seeking portraits and genre scenes that aggrandized their wealth, moreover material possessions. In 1924 he was appointed an officer of the French Academy and member of the Committee to the French Alliance in Florence. His commitment to working with French artists in Italy was awarded posthumously in 1945 by the French government with the Legion of Honor. Though quite distinctive, Soulacroix's works are often confounded with those of his father's Charles Frederic Joseph Soulacroix. Many art database references (even Benezit) and Google images attribute his elegant paintings of ladies in refined domestic spaces to his father, who specialized in religious subject matter in two very different mediums - marble and frescos.

Condition Report: **There is a pin-sized hole to the right of the second pair of sconces from the left with subsequent pin head-sized loss of pigment. A few small spots of flaking of pigment are scattered throughout. Light buckling of the canvas is present to the upper left corner. Painting exhibits scattered areas of inpainting to the far right wallpaper panel, to the back of the lady's head and neck on the right, and to the chair legs. Faint craquelure is present throughout and there is an accretion (light streak) to the lower bottom center. Condition issues are not overtly visible, and are as to be expected with age and medium.

FRÉDÉRIC SOULACROIX, (FRENCH 1858-1933), THE SUITOR''S GLANCE

Estimate: $7,000 - $9,000

Description: FRÉDÉRIC SOULACROIX (french 1858-1933) THE SUITOR''S GLANCE Signed and located ''F. Soulacroix Florence'' bottom right, oil on canvas 24 3/8 x 16 3/4 in. (62 x 42.5cm). provenance: Private Collection, Virginia.

Condition Report: Generally very good overall condition, the unlined canvas in probable need of restretching as it has some uneven slack in places, in largely unrestored condition and with some minor varnish inconsistencies. There is some probably retouching to upper left background near top of canvas, some retouching to parts of bombe commode at right and a small group of filled in specks at part of man's right side. As seen in catalogue photo, there is a small mechanical damage located near top of commode, visible in catalogue and online photos. This linear mark is not quite a tear, but is nearly a tear - there is no missing paint and technically it is not quite deep enough a linear impression to arguably qualify as a full tear, but it is nearly a small tear, and also visible from the verso. We emphasize as well that much of the commode appears purplish under u.v. light, due largely, in our opinion, to the pigments used, though there is quite likely restoration to the commode. Frame: 36 3/4 x 29 1/8 x 4 1/8 in. Descriptions provided in both printed and on-line catalogue formats do not include condition reports. The absence of a condition statement does not imply that the lot is in perfect condition or completely free from wear and tear, imperfections or the effects of aging. Interested bidders are strongly encouraged to request a condition report on any lots upon which they intend to bid, prior to placing a bid. All transactions are governed by Freeman's Conditions of Sale.

Portrait of Woman by Frederick Soulacroix, Oil on Canvas

Estimate: $25,000 - $35,000

Description: Frederick Soulacroix (French, 1858-1953), titled Resting with Fan, signed and dated Florence, 1889; 24 x 12.75 in. and housed in original decorative gilt and gesso frame.Although there is some discrepancy over his nationality (either French or Italian), Soulacroix spent the majority of his life in Italy. He lived in Rome until the age of four when his father, Charles Soulacroix, a painter himself, gained work in Paris. Returning to Italy in 1870, Soulacroix spent time in Firenze, where he studied at the Academia de Bella Arte and the Scuola di Pittura. Soulacroix married in Firenze in 1890 and had four children in Italy. At some point, Soulacroix probably moved back to France, because in 1924, the French authorities nominated the painter Officier d'Academie. Working in Italy around the turn of the 20th century, a majority of Soulacroix's works were bought by outside art buyers, mostly Americans, Britains, Germans, South Americans and Canadians. Currently, his paintings are held in many private collections around the world. This portrait is an example of Soulacroix's typical style: a realistic portrait of a woman posing in an interior space that features luxuriant fabrics, furniture and fine accents that suggest it is a stately home. Soulacroix has used a detailed handling of paint to highlight the lush surfaces of the fabrics.

Condition Report: Recently cleaned. Small inpainting to left above circular couch cushion.
