Description: "Amorino Dormiente (Sleeping Cupid)" by Massimo Stanzione (1586-1656). Inscribed (on the reverse) Il Cavaliere Massimo for Massimo Stanzione. The frame of extremely fine quality, with its beautiful gilding and forged-iron hanging hook, has never been altered and appears to be the original. Stanzione was one of the leading painters of Naples in the first half of the 17th century, eclipsed only by Jusepe de Ribera (1591-1652) with respect to the prestige of his innumerable commissions. Many of Stanzione's grand altarpieces remain in situ but his repertoire was prodigious in terms of its diversity and his portraits, mythologies, and depictions of religious subjects are dispersed worldwide. His art was strongly influenced by that of Caravaggio (in Naples 1606 and 1609/10) and, later, by the Bolognese who sojourned in Naples such as Guido Reni and Domenichino; he was a collaborator with Artemesia Gentileschi on more than one occasion. This lot was examined, researched, and described by Roger Ward, PhD. Roger Ward completed his MA and PhD degrees at the Courtauld Institute of Art, London. He is currently an adjunct curator and guest curator at several museums, a consultant for the U.S. Department of Homeland Security for the repatriation and restitution of confiscated works of art, and an expert advisor. ; c. 1586-1656

Condition Report: This example appears never to have been cleaned: the old, discolored varnish layer is grimy. The paint surface is, nonetheless, remarkably well preserved with impasto in the clouds of the sky, for example. The unlined canvas is in remarkably good condition; a few small and scattered holes have been neatly patched on the reverse. The frame has never been altered and appears to be the original. See detail pictures.

Description: oil on canvas, unlined

Condition Report: The following condition report has been provided by Simon Parkes of Simon Parkes Art Conservation, Inc. 502 East 74th St. New York, NY 212-734-3920, simonparkes@msn.com, an independent restorer who is not an employee of Sotheby's. This work has obviously not been restored in many years. Painted on a heavy piece of linen, it is not lined. The shadow of the figure is clearly visible on the reverse. There are a few small patches that have been applied to the reverse. The stretcher is original. The surface is quite uneven and there is instability, particularly down the left side. The painting may have never been cleaned, and it is certainly very dirty. The blue of the sky has become weaker, and there is visible discoloration in this area. The darker colors may have sunk as well. But the color seems to be very healthy within the figure itself and in the blanket and cushion on which he lies. The only restorations are applied to small losses addressed by the patches on the reverse. It seems that the canvas may have become adhered to the stretcher bars around the edges, and there are a few losses here that require attention. This picture obviously needs conservation. If the restoration is carefully carried out, the condition will be seen to be very good except for some thinness in the sky. Please note, powder post beetles are currently active the frame and wooden stretcher of the painting. Immediately following the sale, both frame and painting will be treated by Sotheby's at no cost to the buyer. The process will in no way cause damage. For further information, please do not hesitate to contact the department."This lot is offered for sale subject to Sotheby's Conditions of Business, which are available on request and printed in Sotheby's sale catalogues. The independent reports contained in this document are provided for prospective bidders' information only and without warranty by Sotheby's or the Seller."

MASSIMO STANZIONE ORTA DI ATELLA 1585-1656 NAPOLI

Estimated Price: Log in or create account to view price data

Description: oil on canvas

Condition Report: The following condition report has been provided by Simon Parkes of Simon Parkes Art Conservation, Inc. 502 East 74th St. New York, NY 212-734-3920, simonparkes@msn.com, an independent restorer who is not an employee of Sotheby's. This large work has probably not recently been restored, but nonetheless could remain in its current condition in many respects. Some of the golden robe in the lower right has blanched and should be reformed. This type of blanching can also be seen in the robe of the standing saint in the red gown in the center right. As the remainder of the picture looks respectable, it is not recommended that the work be cleaned. With a fresh varnish, some attention to the blanched areas and perhaps a continuation of the retouches to refine and correct this work, the picture would become considerably more presentable. Within the figures, the white colors of the shirt and turban of the king on the far right are probably the most damaged and restored. The white ermine of the kneeling king in the lower right has similarly developed some cracking. There is a fairly significant loss in the sky on the right side. However, these restorations can be considered quite modest for a work of this scale and period."This lot is offered for sale subject to Sotheby's Conditions of Business, which are available on request and printed in Sotheby's sale catalogues. The independent reports contained in this document are provided for prospective bidders' information only and without warranty by Sotheby's or the Seller."

MASSIMO STANZIONE ORTA DI ATELLA NEAR CASERTA (?) 1585 (?) - 1656 (?) NAPLES (?)

Estimated Price: Log in or create account to view price data

Description: THE PRESENTATION OF A SICK MAN BEFORE THE BODY OF SAN DIEGO D'ALCALÀmeasurements note65 by 50 cm.; 25 1/2 by 19 5/8 in.brushed on the reverse with an old collector's mark: MBoil on canvas, probably a modelloNOTEThis painting closely relates to a fresco by Stanzione of the same subject on the underside of the entrance arch to the chapel of San Diego d'Alcalà (also known as the D'Aquino chapel), Cappellone di San Giacomo della Marca, in the church of Santa Maria la Nova in Naples (see S. Schütze and T. Willette, Massimo Stanzione, Naples 1992, p. 236, cat. no. A89.I, reproduced p. 374, fig. 313). Given that the composition is almost identical to that in the fresco, it is likely to be a modello (or presentation piece), or perhaps a ricordo after the fresco, rather than a bozzetto carried out in the preparatory stages of the design. The chapel, which was renovated by Tommaso d'Aquino (1601-1662), first duke of Casola, some time between 1634 and 1646, is frescoed with three scenes depicting miracles from the life of San Diego d'Alcalà. The episode of the Presentation of a sick man before the body of San Diego d'Alcalà is situated on the left side of the underarch in the chapel, with San Diego d'Alcalà kissing the feet of Christ in the centre and a much-damaged San Diego d'Alcalà liberating a possessed woman to the right of it (see Schütze & Willette, op. cit., cat. nos. A89.II and III, reproduced figs. 312 and 314). Stanzione's frescoes probably date from the first half of the 1640s, and a similar date might be presumed for the present canvas. The attribution has been endorsed by Professor Thomas Willette of the University of Michigan, to whom we are grateful (written communication, 2 July 2003).

Description: Saint Mary Magdalen in Penitence oil on canvas--unframed 80 x 59in. (203.2 x 151.2cm.) NOTES We are grateful to Sebastian Schtze for confirming the attribution from a transparency. He dates the present picture circa 1626, comparing the facial type of the saint with those of Saints Cosmas and Damian (S. Schtze and T. Willette, Massimo Stanzione, 1992, p. 191, no. A6, p. 17, color pl. I, p. 271, fig. 99) and the putti with those in the Adoration of the Shepherds in the Capitolo dei Padri in the Certosa di san Martino, Naples ( ibid., p. 192, no. A9, p. 275, fig. 105). Schtze considers the present painting as offereing significant documentation of Stanzione's development from Roman-based Caravaggism to his characteristic Neapolitan manner.

Description: PORTRAIT OF ALVARO SEMEDOmeasurements note43 1/2 by 35 1/4 in.; 110.5 by 89.5 cm.inscribed and dated upper right ALVARVS.SEMEDO.LV./ SITANVS.SOC.IESV./ SINENSIS.COLLEG./ RECTOR.1641oil on canvasNOTEFrom 1540 on, western missionaries traveled East to explore China and convert its inhabitants to Christianity. The first missionary, and founder of the Catholic Missions of China, was Matteo Ricci. Shortly after his death in 1610, he was replaced by Alvaro Semedo, a Portuguese Jesuit monk.Semedo lived in China from 1613 to 1637. During his stay he endeared himself to the locals and was given the name Father Tseng. In addition to his work as a missionary, Semedo published, upon his return to Madrid, accounts on political and secular affairs in China as well as information about the wars being fought between the Ming and the Manchus. Throughout the seventeenth century these descriptions of Chinese culture and politics were considered reliable and valuable sources of information. Eventually, his writings were translated into multiple languages, among them Italian, Spanish, English, and French. The inscription on this painting refers to Semedo's tenure as procurator for the Chinese mission in Rome.
