Thomas Struth Biography
(b Geldern/Lower Rhein, Germany, 1954) Contemporary German photographer. Under the guidance of his teacher, Bernhard Becher, at Dusseldorf Academy, Struth began his fascination with architecture as artifact. After graduation, he began an extensive series of black and white cityscape photography. As in Becher's work, Struth probed the relationship between the past and the present. In 1989, Struth began his now illustrious museum series in which he photographed museum visitors as they viewed the world’s most celebrated paintings.* Struth continued this theme when he photographed visitors of churches. Struth lives and works in Düsseldorf, Germany. (Credit: Christie’s, New York, Post War and Contemporary Art Day Sale, November 13, 2007, Lot 1.)
