Giovanni Domenico Tiepolo Biography

(b 1727, Venezia, Italy; d 1804, Venezia, Italy), Venetian Painter; Draftsman; Printmaker. Born into the greatest artistic dynasty of 18th-century Venice, Giandomenico trained in the Tiepolo family workshop and spent much of his career executing projects designed by his father, Giovanni Battista Tiepolo*. Giandomenico’s painting style was ultimately an extension of his father's. Giandomenico’s independent commissions included religious and mythological subject matter and works that drew from contemporary life and theater. These were, at least in subject matter, unique to the younger Tiepolo. In addition to producing his own artistic pieces, he continued to work with Giambattista. Around 1750 in Wurzburg, Germany, Giandomenico acted as principal assistant to his father in the fresco of the ceilings and walls of the Kaisersaal of the Residenz. Other commissions with Gianbattista included the Villa Valmarana near Vicenza, Italy around 1757 and in Spain in 1762. The paintings they produced in Madrid at the Royal Palace of Charles II were an influence on Goya’s early career. The Tiepolo’s were among the last of the Italian artists who were invited to work at the Royal Palace. After the death of his father in Madrid in 1770, Giandomenico returned to Italy, and worked in Venice, Genoa and Brescia. Giandomenico stopped working for a period of time, but began again in the 1790s. He continued to live in Italy until his death in 1804.
