Lajos Tihanyi Biography
(b Budapest, 19 Oct 1885; d Paris, 11 June 1938). Hungarian painter, draughtsman and lithographer. He was a deaf-mute, and he was essentially self-taught as an artist, although he studied for a short while privately and at the School for Industrial Drawing in Budapest. He was very amenable to foreign stylistic influences, and his style changed frequently during his lifetime; Expressionist, Cubist and Futurist elements can all be found in his painting, which is characterized by internal tension and compactness. In his early years he strove for a balanced composition and mildly decorative forms delineated by contours, as in Detail of a Street in Nagybánya (1908; Budapest, N.G.). He became a member of the radical Fauvist-influenced Group THE EIGHT (iii) , and he exhibited with them from 1909 until they disbanded in 1912.
