Biography: Town

(b Toronto, 13 July 1924; d Peterborough, Ont., 27 Dec 1990). Canadian painter, draughtsman and printmaker. He studied at the Ontario College of Art in Toronto from 1943 to 1945. He exhibited widely, holding over 100 one-man shows beginning in 1954. He was a founder-member in 1953 of PAINTERS ELEVEN and was responsible for coining the group’s name and for writing the statements for its catalogues. His inventiveness, technical facility and independence of spirit were channelled into a prodigious output in drawing, printmaking, painting and collage. His work ranged from large-scale abstract paintings such as Banners (oil and lucite on canvas, 1.84*1.83 m, 1960; U. Regina, Mackenzie A.G.) to figure drawings of great sensitivity (e.g. Oskar Kokoschka Draws Ezra Pound , pencil, 1985; see 1986 exh. cat., p. 208), and from biting satirical works, such as his Enigma drawings (1964–72; see 1986 exh. cat., pp. 143–52), to eccentric assemblages of found materials, for example The Weather Report (A Paean to Inaccuracy) (mixed media collage on door, 1984–5; see 1986 exh. cat., p. 195).
