Gustave van de Woestyne Biography

(b ghent, 2 aug 1881; d uccle, 21 april 1947). belgian painter. he studied at the koninklijke akademie voor schone kunsten in ghent from 1895 to 1899. in 1901, under the influence of his brother the poet karel van de woestyne, he settled in laethem-saint-martin as part of the first group of artists to form a colony there. between the years 1902 and 1906 he worked as a nurse, and he resided for some months in a benedictine monastery in leuven in 1905, thereafter staying in laethem-saint-martin, leuven and from 1913 in tiegem. his admiration for the work of the flemish ‘primitives’, which he saw at an exhibition in bruges in 1902, and for the art of the english pre-raphaelites is apparent in his paintings and drawings. they are thematically very varied: farmers from the region, pastoral scenes, allegorical representations, religious events set in a rural scene, portraits and, after world war i, still-lifes. his technique also varied: on the one hand works painted in a linear manner in delicate, flat colours; on the other slightly hazy paintings in which the colours and outlines become blurred. there is nevertheless a great uniformity in the ever-present atmosphere of alienation and unreality. figures are outlined against a golden background or against a stylized rural scene; they are introspective and mutually isolated by their attitudes, expressions and gestures, for example the two springs (1910; antwerp, kon. mus. s. kst.).
