Lot 6: Bartholomeus Johannes van Hove (Dutch 1790-1880) and Hubertus van Hove (Dutch 1814-65)

Estimated Price: Log in or create account to view price data

Description: het uitgaan van de dienst (leaving church) signed and dated 1846 l.r. oil on panel 80 by 62 cm., 31 1/2 by 24 1/2 in. Provenance: T. Bromley & Sons Ltd., Bolton The present painting is a collaborative work between father and son, Bartholomeus Johannes and Hubertus van Hove. While the speciality of the father was the capturing of architectural beauty within town scenes, his passion in this field residing in particular with church architecture, Hubertus van Hove mainly painted doorkijkjes, figures in domestic vistas inspired by Pieter de Hooch and 17th Century Dutch painting, in which views of outdoor light are seen through an interior. It is likely that both artists combined their special skills accordingly in Het uitgaan van de Dienst. The animated figures, picturesque animals and plants in the foreground are rendered in beautiful detail, lending the composition vivacity and dynamism which is juxtaposed with the imposing and meticulous depiction of the church in the background. The beautiful colour harmonies and subtle play of light and shade appear to be of Hubertus van Hove's hand, who, notably in the depiction of the peacock to the right, seems to have found an outlet for his love of vivid tonalities.

Lot 157: Christoffel Bisschop (1828-1904)

Estimated Price: Log in or create account to view price data

Description: A sunlit Hindeloopen interior with parents proudly admiring their newlyborn signed lower right C.Bisschop oil on canvas 123 x 152 cm; and a Watercolour of a detail of the same subject by the same hand (2) PROVENANCE Anon. sale, Mak van Waay Amsterdam, 26 June 1956, lot 13, ill. Anon. sale, Christie's Laren, 22 October 1979, lot 388. LITERATURE Marius, Dutch Painters of the 19th Century, Woodbridge 1983, p.180 ill. NOTES The artist was born in Leeuwarden in 1828. After receiving an elementary education in his birthplace, the eighteen year old Bisschop moved to Delft to work under W.H. Schmidt (1809-1849). Before eventually settling down in The Hague in 1855, the artist studied under the tutelage of H. van Hove Bz (1814-1864) and Ch. Gleyre (1808-1874) in Paris. Fourteen years later, in 1869, Bisschop married the English artist Catherine Seaton Forman Swift (1834-1928), also known as Kate Swift. Until the artist's death in 1904, he and his wife resided in a luxurious villa in Scheveningen called the Villa Frisia. In an article published in s'Gravenhage in onze tijd in 1893, art critic J. Gram highly praised the couple's taste and describes the villa's interior as a gem:"Achter het hotel de la Promenade begint het Van Stolkpark. Eene dier Villa's, Frisia geheten, wordt bewoond door het schilderpaar Bisschop, die van hun interieur een Zeventiende-eeuwsch juweeltje hebben gemaakt". Just like many other artists of his time, Bisschop was a fervent collector of antiques and put these objects to artistic use. His collection is however remarkable not only for its sheer size, but also for the prominent role it fulfils in his paintings. As is evident in his oeuvre, the artist especially took a great interest in mediaeval, 17th century and folklore art. Nowadays, the artist's vast collection of antiques is situated in the Fries Museum, where the atmosphere of the old Villa Frisia is brought to life in so-called Bisschop rooms. The present lot is a fine example of the way Bisschop combined his love for antiques with his talent for painting intimate genre pieces. One can assume Bisschop completed the picture before 1892, as an etching after the painting was published in the magazine Eigen Haard that very year. SALESROOM NOTICE Please note that the measurements should read: 123 x 152 cm.
