Frederick Judd Waugh Biography
(b Bordentown, New Jersey 1861; d Provincetown, 1940) American Painter. Frederick Judd Waugh is most famous as a painter of seascapes; renowned for his depictions of frothy surf crashing against a rocky shore. Both of his parents were painters so he and his sister, Ida, followed them into the profession. From 1880 to 1883, Waugh studied under the painter Thomas Eakins at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts, then he traveled to Paris where he continued his studies at the Academie Julian. In 1885, upon the death of his father, he returned to Pensylvania where he remained for the next seven years; painting and doing commercial work. In 1892, Waugh married Clara Eugenie Bunn and set off for fifteen years of living in London and traveling Europe. It was at this point, inspired by the rocky coast line of the British Isles, that Waugh developed his distinctive style of marine painting. He returned to his native country in 1907 where he remained, traveling between New York, Massachusetts and Maine, until his death.
