American Impressionist Artist, Original Oil Painting on Wood Panel entitled, "Hiker in the Mountains" Signed, "G. Wiegand," Framed, Choice Extremely Fine. This American Impressionist Oil Painting of a Western Mountain Pass Landscape scene, shows a sole individual hiking, Painting on Board, and Artist Signed, "G.(ustave) Wiegand" at the lower right corner. No date or place, late 19th to early 20th Century. Painting measures 9.5" x 7.5" and is nicely presented in a gold leaf frame to overall size of 13.5" x 11.5". There is some very minor expert retouch to upper and left edges. Gustave Wiegand was born in Bremen, Germany in 1870. Wiegand studied at the Royal Academy in Berlin and The Royal Academy of Dresden and also worked under Eugen Bract and William Merritt Chase in New York. He belonged to the Salmagundi Club, the Allied Artists of America, and the New York Society of painters. His works are in the collections of the Brooklyn Museum, the National Arts Club in New York City, and the Newark Museum. During his career, he won numerous prizes and medals while exhibiting at the National Academy of Design from 1894-1900 (prize 1905), the St. Louis Exposition of 1904 (medal), the Allied Artists of America in 1937 (prize), and the World's Fair in St. Louis (medal).

Died Nov. 3, 1957, in Old Chatham, NY. Pupil of Dresden Royal Academy under Eugene Bracht; Chase in New York. Member: Salmagundi Club; Allied Artists of America: New York Society of Painters; National Arts Club (life). Awards: Bronze medal, St. Academy of Design, 1905; prize, Allied Artists of America, 1937. Work: Stars Above Home,' National Arts Club, New York; Newark Museum; Brooklyn Museum. Has exhibited extensively throughout the U.S. Address in 1953, Summit, NJ. Gustave Adolph Wiegand (New York/Germany, 1870-1957) impressionist oil on canvas autumn landscape depicting a dirt path winding through low hills, past a figure and three sheep, to a body of water. Hills are visible in the background under a pink-tinted early morning or late afternoon sky. Signed "Gustave Wiegard" lower right. Pencil inscription, possibly a title, "Ruby Autumn Tints," en verso of stretcher. Housed in an American early 20th century style giltwood frame with carved corner decoration. Sight - 23 1/2" H x 37 1/2" W. Framed - 27 3/4" H x 41 3/4" W. Provenance: Estate of Carl Klein, Brentwood, TN. Biography: Born in Germany, Gustave Wiegand studied at the Royal Academy and in Berlin and Dresden before coming to America. He exhibited, and won a medal, at the World's Fair in St. Louis in 1904, and later, a prize from the National Academy of Design. He was a member of the National Arts Club, the Allied Artists of America and of the New York Society of Painters. His work is in the collection of the Brooklyn and Newark Museums.
