Andrew George Winter American, 1892-1958 Surf off Whitehead, Monhegan Island, Maine

Lot 92: Andrew George Winter American, 1892-1958 Surf off Whitehead, Monhegan Island, Maine

Estimated Price: Log in or create account to view price data

Description: Andrew George Winter American, 1892-1958 Surf off Whitehead, Monhegan Island, Maine Signed A. Winter in the lower center Oil on board 24 x 32 inches Provenance: Private collection, NH A talented painter known for his powerful brand of Realism, Andrew Winter drew inspiration from a variety of locales, ranging from New York and the Virgin Islands to California and the Far West. However, he painted his finest work on Monhegan, a tiny and remote island located ten miles off the coast of Maine that had been attracting painters from New York and Boston since the late nineteenth century. Winter began making seasonal visits to Monhegan during the late 1920s. He became a permanent resident in 1940, which provided him with the opportunity to paint Monhegan year round. He was thus one of few Monhegan artists to feature the island in the throes of winter, and he favored the island's less-populated windward side. His image of this subject, such as this oil, reveal that for him, the cold season of the year was never bleak or colorless, but filled with unlimited pictorial potential, as in this scene of stormy skies, crashing waves, and scarred and lightning struck trees suggests. Evoking the tradition of the sublime in painting, this scene conveys a sense of awe at the breadth of nature's elemental forces. C The Spanierman Gallery, LLC

Andrew George Winter American, 1892-1958 Palos Verdes Lighthouse

Lot 93: Andrew George Winter American, 1892-1958 Palos Verdes Lighthouse

Estimated Price: Log in or create account to view price data

Description: Andrew George Winter American, 1892-1958 Palos Verdes Lighthouse Signed A. Winter (ll) Watercolor on paper 20 1/4 x 27 inches Unframed Provenance: Private collection A former sailor who went on to establish a notable career as a painter, Andrew Winter is mostly associated with the state of Maine, but he also worked in a variety of locales including New York City, the Virgin Islands, and California. Wherever he traveled, he sought out and portrayed lighthouses, which became his signature of sorts. Thus, it is not surprising that on a trip to California he would choose to depict the Point Vincente lighthouse in Palos Verdes. His confident and versatile watercolor method is strongly apparent in this work in which he offset the sculptural solidity of the rocky cliffs against the translucency of the sky. The lighthouse and its outbuildings are dwarfed by the drama of the natural setting, but Winter gave them significance by rendering them with crisp and precise contours. The light reflected in the lighthouse imbues this sparkling form with a sense of timelessness and permanence. C The Spanierman Gallery, LLC

Condition Report: There is a 1/2 inch boarder of tape recto on all sides. Description: Andrew George Winter American, 1893-1958 Red Silo Signed A. Winter (lr); inscribed #71 Red Silo on the verso Watercolor and gouache on paper 15 x 21 inches Unframed Provenance: Private collection A painter born in Sindi Estonia, Winter is best known for his images of the coastline of Monhegan Island, Maine, rendered in a style of vigorous naturalism. Like Edward Hopper, he was drawn to quintessential American forms such as lighthouses and old New England farms seen standing in place but often seemingly deserted. Working here in watercolor, Winter gave life to one such farm, choosing a skewed perspective and a close up vantage point to convey the weathered strength of these hardy time-resistant structures. Description: Andrew George Winter American, 1893-1958 Logging Scene Signed A. Winter (ll); inscribed #56 Logging Scene on the verso Watercolor and gouache on paper 14 1/2 x 21 1/2 inches Unframed Provenance: Private collection Before he became an artist, Winter-born in Sindi, Estonia-was a mariner, sailing on British and American vessels. He is best known for the images he created of Monhegan Island, Maine, where he settled permanently. In this watercolor, Winter used a forceful drybrush technique, juxtaposing stacked logs against a scrim of wispy trees. Tracks across the mud in the foreground suggest the recent presence of a bulldozer. As Winter treated the subject in semi-abstract terms, its features only emerge gradually into view, just as might our awareness of the fragility of our forests in the face of industry. Description: Andrew Winter American, 1893-1958 St. Thomas Archway, 1937 Signed A Winter and dated -37 (ll); inscribed as titled on the verso Watercolor on paper 15 x 21 inches Unframed Provenance: Private collection As an artist employed by the New Deal in the 1930s, Winter was assigned a series of canvases appropriate to his background as a mariner (he had earlier worked as a sailor on British and American schooners and steamships), depicting life aboard the U.S. Coast Cutter "Champlain." In 1937, this assignment led him to the U.S. Virgin Islands, where he was commissioned to paint scenic views that were exhibited throughout the United States. Dating from this trip, this view of buildings in St. Thomas reveals Winter's facility at using watercolor with precision and fluidity to record Caribbean light, which he captured in the sparkling reflections and soft shadows in weathered stone walls.
