Grant Wood Biography

(b Anamosa, Iowa, 1892; d Cedar Rapids, Iowa, 1942) American Painter. Grant Wood spent his early childhood on a small farm in Anamosa, Iowa. In 1901, Grant’s father died and the family was forced to move to the nearby city of Cedar Rapids. Grant pursued art at many different schools, studying and practicing disciplines as varied as jewelry making, carpentry and interior design. He put his talents to unusual use while serving in the army during World War I; painting camouflage on tanks and cannons. Wood spent the 1920’s traveling and studying painting all over Europe. Upon his return to Iowa, he began to develop his own, distinctly American style. In 1930 Wood produced American Gothic. The image became an iconic representation of the American heartland; especially as the country moved into the devastating depression of the 1930’s. Wood thus became the most visible proponent of the Regionalist movement: a group of mid-western painters whose realistic style opposed the abstraction so popular in Europe at the time.
