ANDREW WYETH, (AMERICAN 1917-2009),

Lot 82: ANDREW WYETH, (AMERICAN 1917-2009), "THE LOBSTER MAN"

Estimated Price: Log in or create account to view price data

Description: ANDREW WYETH (american 1917-2009)/span "THE LOBSTER MAN" Signed 'Andrew Wyeth' bottom right, watercolor on paper 19 1/2 x 26 1/2 in. (49.5 x 67.3cm) provenance: /spanThe artist. Acquired from the above by the present owner, thence by descent in the family Private Collection, Delaware. note:/span This watercolor was commissioned through American Artists in New York as a potential Maxwell House Coffee advert. Although the correspondence dates to 1948, the related drawings are dated 1945 so it is difficult to determine the actual date of execution. This watercolor is to be included in the forthcoming catalogue raisonné being prepared by Betsy James Wyeth.

Condition Report: Professionally matted and framed, the full sheet with four (mulberry?) paper tape hinges top edge verso affixed to undermat. There is no evidence of any restoration or loss. The full sheet size as measured out of frame: 21 3/ 16 x 28 3/16 inches. The work is executed on a heavy stock paper. In generally overall fine condition apart from some visible pale mount staining and some generally minor, scattered (largely unobtrusive) foxing spots/slight pale surface discoloration. The pale 'bands' of toning measure approximately 1 1/2 inches in width along outer top edge of sheet, approximately 7/8 inch in width along outer right edge of sheet, and approximately 7/8 inch in width along outer left edge of sheet. There is a smaller, less defined amount of pale toning at bottom edge of sheet. Verso of sheet has some extraneous watercolor and some scuff marks - these are confined to the verso of the sheet and thus not visible through to the front of the sheet with image. Descriptions provided in both printed and on-line catalogue formats do not include condition reports. The absence of a condition statement does not imply that the lot is in perfect condition or completely free from wear and tear, imperfections or the effects of aging. Interested bidders are strongly encouraged to request a condition report on any lots upon which they intend to bid, prior to placing a bid. All transactions are governed by Freeman's Conditions of Sale.

ANDREW WYETH, (AMERICAN 1917-2009),

Lot 100: ANDREW WYETH, (AMERICAN 1917-2009), "GRIST MILL"

Estimated Price: Log in or create account to view price data

Description: ANDREW WYETH (american 1917-2009)/span "GRIST MILL" Signed 'Andrew Wyeth' lower left, watercolor on paper 20 x 28 1/8 in. (50.8 x 71.4cm) provenance: /spanM. Knoedler & Co., New York, New York. Hal B. Wallis, Hollywood, California. 'Important American Paintings, Drawings and Sculpture of the 18th, 19th and 20th Centuries,' Christie's, New York, May 25, 1989, lot 406. Private Collection. 'Important American Paintings, Drawings and Sculpture' Christie's, New York. November 29, 2000, lot 120. Private Collection, Princeton, New Jersey. note:/span The present work, painted in 1968, depicts Brinton's Mill on the artist's property in Chadds Ford, Pennsylvania. This watercolor will be included in Betsy James Wyeth's forthcoming catalogue raisonné of the artist's work.

Condition Report: In generally good overall condition with no visible repairs or restoration. The full sheet size, as measured outside of the mat and frame, is 20 x 28 inches. The sheet is laid down - either fully or partially - to paper, with the latter wrapped around a wooden stretcher. As there are areas with some 'play' between the sheet and the backing, it is possible that only part of the sheet is laid down. The four corners of the sheet are slightly raised along a diagonal ( sheet is not creased, not folded). Each outer edge of the sheet is browned. There is a tiny, unobtrusive loss to part of the outer upper left corner and an almost imperceptible tiny apparent surface abrasion at lower right corner. The image itself is in fine original condition and retains fresh strong colors.

Lot 101: ANDREW WYETH, (AMERICAN 1917-2009), "ROBIN MCCOY NEILDS"

Estimated Price: Log in or create account to view price data

Description: ANDREW WYETH (american 1917-2009)/span "ROBIN MCCOY NEILDS" Signed 'A. Wyeth' bottom right, pencil on paper Image: 8 1/2 x 8 7/8 in. (21.6 x 22.5cm) Sheet: 14 x 17 1/4 in. (35.6 x 43.8cm) provenance: /spanA gift from the artist to Robert Neilds, then fiancé of Robin McCoy. By descent in the family. Acquired from Kenneth Lindsay, 1988. Private Collection, Oregon. exhibited:/span "A Family Paints Itself." Brandywine River Museum, Chadds Ford, Pennsylvania. February 10 - May 13,1973. note:/span The sitter is a niece of Andrew Wyeth. This drawing will be included in Betsy James Wyeth's forthcoming catalogue raisonné of the artist's work.

Condition Report: Good overall condition, with two (mulberry paper?) hinges at top edge verso affixed to mat. The sheet has a perforated top edge, so it appears it was removed from a sketch book. There is pale light staining except to very outer edges. On very close inspection there are two small restored areas (unobstrusive in our opinion): one is approx. 5/8 inches long at bottom edge of sheet at center left, and there is a smaller restored area to sheet at bottom right outer edge. There is an impressed line in the background at top edge of sheet, center right. This impressed line is NOT touching the figure and is mostly visible from the verso, measuring approx. 1 3/8 inches long. There is some scattered surface smudging. ANDREW WYETH, (AMERICAN 1917-2009), ROBIN MCCOY ON A BLANKET

Lot 103: ANDREW WYETH, (AMERICAN 1917-2009), ROBIN MCCOY ON A BLANKET

Estimated Price: Log in or create account to view price data

Description: ANDREW WYETH (american 1917-2009)/span ROBIN MCCOY ON A BLANKET With; FIGURES AND DOG/span verso, a double side drawing with hand-written letter from Wyeth to Robert Neilds, dated April 15, 1969 recto & verso, red ink and pencil on paper 17 x 14 in. (43.2 x 35.6cm) provenance: A gift from the artist to Robert Neilds. By descent in the family. Acquired from Kenneth Lindsay, 1988. Private Collection, Oregon. exhibited:/span "A Family Paints Itself." Brandywine River Museum, Chadds Ford, Pennsylvania. February 10 - May 13,1973. note:/span The dog is the artist's dog, Nell Gwyn, and below the artist has depicted himself with drawing pad surrounded by Jimmy Lynch, Carolyn Wyeth, Robin McCoy and Nell Gwyn. This letter will be included in Betsy James Wyeth's forthcoming catalogue raisonné of the artist's work.

Condition Report: Double-sided drawing is in generally good overall condition, but with some condition defects, most notably two hard folds in sheet: one a vertical fold through sheet approx. 3 1/4 inches away from the outer right edge and a horizontal fold, approx. 8 7/16 inches from the bottom edge. These folds are visible both recto and verso. At the juncture of these hard folds are small soft creases. The sheet has a perforated top edge, so it appears it was removed from a sketch book. There are two small tape hinges at outer left edge verso affixed to undermat. There is a small tear in the sheet at upper center, approx. 1/4 x 3/8 inches. This tear appears to us to be mendable. There is pale light staining to sheet except to outer edges, both recto and verso. There are some scattered areas of very slight surface discoloration, including some small brownish spots (foxing?) at bottom edge, just off center. There is a smudge (intended?) to part of house at bottom right.

Wyeth, Andrew - Marsh Hawk, Tempera on masonite, 30 1/2 x 45

Lot 103: Wyeth, Andrew - Marsh Hawk, Tempera on masonite, 30 1/2 x 45

Estimated Price: Log in or create account to view price data

Description: Marsh Hawk Tempera on masonite, 30 1⁄2" x 45" Signed Executed in 1964 $5,000,000. - 7,000,000.Andrew Wyeth's paintings have the rare ability to draw the viewer into the past, a past that is distinctly his, yet he allows one to feel as if it is somehow a shared memory. Marsh Hawk is an extraordinary example of this ability; you can't help but feel a twinge of nostalgia for the old millhouse and the long forgotten wagons. Like a great storyteller, Wyeth presents a scene that is altogether foreign, but makes one feel as if you are looking through an old family photo album."Time stops as his paintings make permanent what we know to be transitory. Paths and tracks in the snow or sand, or birds in flight become as fixed and static as ancient hieroglyphs; a sunbeam's playfulness on a wall, a patch of snow in the sun, or a fleeting flush of anger on his wife's cheek are made timeless and unchanging." (The Art of Andrew Wyeth, San Francisco, California, 1973, p. 155) The painting gained its title because of the hawk perched on a post in the background and depicts the Wyeths' Millhouse in Chadds Ford, Pennsylvania as it was in 1964. While the piece depicts a very specific time and place, Wyeth's use of color and shadows combined with fine details makes you feel as if you are recalling an old memory or a forgotten dream. Wyeth described the painting in his autobiography thusly: "This tempera was done in Pennsylvania. The hay wagons were given to me by the Harveys, who lived nearby. I found their colors wonderful and their craftsmanship beautiful. I was taken by the shape of the carts and the way the wheels were built. They dated back to around 1850 - 1860. Their wheels and hubs were magnificently constructed. Some of my best drawings are details of them. To think that these very wagons rolled over those rugged hills of Chadds Ford! The title comes from the marsh hawk sitting on the fence in the left distance. Late afternoon light is streaking across. The wagons were all swept away in a flood down the river to Wilmington. Nothing lasts. Shouldn't." The last line: "Nothing lasts. Shouldn't." tugs at the heart and makes one wish they could preserve the precious memories in life as Wyeth has done so masterfully in Marsh Hawk. When this painting was sold at Sotheby's in 1981, it achieved the highest price ever paid for a living American painter at the time. (Key Words: Thoroughbred Horse Racing, Polo, Steeplechase, Fox Hunting, Shooting, Fishing, African Wildlife, Western)
