August Zamoyski Biography
(b Jablon estate, Lublin region, 28 June 1893; d Saint-Clar de Rivière, nr Toulouse, France, 19 May 1970). Sculptor, great-grandson of (2) Stanislaw Kostka Zamoyski. August was a colourful character in Polish and Parisian bohemian life. Although he showed an early interest in sculpture, blacksmithery and wood-carving, he did not take up any systematic artistic studies (apart from drawing courses run by Lovis Corinth). He began exhibiting in 1918, mainly abroad (including the Venice Biennale, 1936). During the inter-war period he divided his time between Poland and for the most part Paris. In 194055 he lived in Rio de Janeiro, where he gave sculpture classes at the Academia de Belas Artes. In 1955 he settled permanently in France.
