Sale Notes:
This large auction (554 lots) of antique and rare titles and ephemera from fields such as Modern Literature, Music, History, and Art and others, will take place on Sunday, November 22. Of special note is a collection of material that belonged to Che Guevara's chief of staff in Cuba, following the revolution.
A large number of scarce signed first editions by suspense, mystery and science fiction authors will be offered. Many are accompanied by certificates of authenticity and/or grading. Among the authors are Arthur C. Clarke, Dean Koontz, Stephen Baxter, Ben Bova, and Michael Crichton. Present as well are a number of rare advanced reading copies, including three from the Harry Potter series. Of particular note among these modern titles is a rare first printing of Steinbeck's "The Grapes of Wrath" in its original dustjacket.
A unique collection of Cuban historical objects will be offered. These items belonged to Jose Manuel Manresa Monzon, the private secretary of Ernesto Che Guevara, following the revolution in 1959. These include a unique, framed original photograph of Guevara and Manresa and an extremely rare original, posthumously printed poster of Guevara. Among the items from this estate is an autographed edition of letters by Fidel Castro while in prison and other scarce Cuban books. Contributing to this group of rare Latin American titles is the "Golden Album of Puerto Rico" (1939), with over 2,000 pictures of the island and texts in Spanish and English.
Another work of historical significance is a rare framed original 1865 newspaper with news of Lincoln's assassination. Also featured in this auction are a great number of pieces of antique and vintage sheet music with well-preserved bright, attractive cover illustrations. Other hard-to-find groups of ephemera from the fields of advertising, tourism, industry, transportation and history will be on sale, as will a large number of antique and vintage periodicals. This particular group will be complemented by a number of lots containing scarce antique photographs.
Other highlights are to be found in a select group of rare books such as a first printing of Robert Dean Frisbie's classic "The Book of Puka-Puka" (1929), a 1725 edition of German theologian Johann Arndt's "Das wahre Christenthum", and quite unusual, "Some Account of the Vampires of Onset" (1892). In addition, there are antique sets by such canonical French authors as Rousseau, Corneille, Racine, and Voltaire.
