Sale Notes:
National Book Auctions will be holding an auction of antique and rare books, stamps, coins, currency and ephemera on Sunday, April. The catalog consists of 500 lots from various estates. Highlights include a select group of signed modern literary firsts such as Tarkington's "The Magnificent Ambersons", Porter's "Ship of Fools", Hulme's "The Bone People", and Wallace's "Ben Hur", and eighteenth-century rarities such as the "Journal of the Votes and Proceedings of the General Assembly of the Colony of New-York", published in 1766, and Chanler's 1744 theological work "The Doctrines of Glorious Grace". A large percentage of books in this auction were consigned from the estate of Lewis Schuman and a great many of the lots include scarce editions of Judaica, both scholarly and literary works. Individual titles in this category that merit special mention include the first U.S. edition of Singer's "The Sinner" in its rare original illustrated dustjacket and Pfeffer's first volume of "Distinguished Jews of America" (1917). Other highlights in this collection are a very uncommon Hollywood promo book published in 1937 by Paramount Pictures. Similarly hard-to-find items: Inez Hogan's Nicodemus series, Toudouze's "Le Roy Soleil" with its lavish color plates, and Frost's 1851 "Thrilling Adventures among the Indians". Present as well are uncommon editions on New York state, such as "History of Livingstone County" (1881), and the complete four-volume "History of Genesee County", edited by L. R. Doty, as well as well-preserved volumes from the fruits of New York series. Among the antique titles in this auction, a number feature works of the 18th and 19th centuries. Of these, Bergman's "A Dissertation on Elective Attractions" (1785), Falkenstein's "Civitatis Erffurtensis" (1739) deserve special mention. Patarol's rare work on numismatics "Panegyricae Orationes Veterum Oratorum Notis" (1708) is one of a substantial number of numismatic and philatelic lots that contain scarce titles, as well as rare stamps, coins and currency. Illustrators of children's literature will also be well represented, with books showing drawings by Grace Drayton, Peter Newell, Otto Nuckel. N. C. Wyeth is particularly well represented with Scribner's illustrated editions of juvenile literature such as "The Last of the Mohicans". Uncommon African-American titles such "Jemmy and His Mother" (1858), and Dyer's "Turky Trott and the Black Santa", in its rare dustjacket, are also present.
