Sale Notes:

The upcoming auction on August 16th features collections of scarce antique, vintage and modern books, works of art, signed first editions, original World War One posters, and ephemera. Featured is the personal library of renowned scholar, Marilyn French, who passed away in May of this year. Of special note among the antique books are a signed first edition of Irving Fisher's "Stock Market Crash - and After" (1930), Elias Boudinot's "The Second Advent or the Coming of the Messiah in Glory" (1815), and a Civil War soldier's pocket book from 1861. This auction will also include modern rare works such as a first printing of F. Scott Fitzgerald's "The Great Gatsby".

A large number of signed modern firsts will also be offered. Among the authors in this collection are Kurt Vonnegut, John Updike, Elie Wiesel, Salman Rushdie, and J. M. Coetzee. Special mention must be made of the rare signed first edition of Stephen King's "Carrie", as Mr. King is known as one of the world's most reclusive authors, who seldom signs any books. Also noteworthy are signed firsts of Seamus Heaney's "Death of a Naturalist" (1966) and Muriel Spark's " The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie" (1962). In addition to these literary titles, a number of signed books by important historical figures will be on sale including Bill and Hillary Clinton, Jimmy Carter, Arthur Schlesinger and biologist James Watson, (credited with discovering DNA). Of special note in this group is a rare signed copy of Mikhail Gorbachev's "Perestroika" (1987).

A number of uncommon works of art are also present, beginning with a large etching of work based on Winslow Homer's, "A Voice from the Cliffs" (1889) by Teyssonnieres. Offered as well is rare artwork by famous postcard artist Xavier Sager.

There are as well a number of lots containing scarce academic titles that were part of the personal library of scholar and feminist activist Marilyn French (1929-2009). Of particular note in this regard are a rare complete six-volume set of "Feminism in Literature", the equally rare three-volume Gabler Garland critical synoptic edition of Joyce's "Ulysses", and a complete two-volume O.E.D.. There are in addition a great many other scarce titles, a number of which bear inscriptions to Professor French.

Finally, it should be mentioned that several very scarce Nazi-era German periodicals are for sale in this auction, many of which are quite uncommon in the runs being offered here.
