About Us
Founded in Philadelphia in 1805 by Tristram Bampfylde Freeman, America’s oldest auction house is now in its sixth generation of continuous family leadership as the company celebrates its 200th anniversary in 2005. The establishment of a strategic partnership with Scotland’s Lyon & Turnbull in 1999 accompanied a complete reorganization of the company, its sales schedule and its specialist staff - beginning with the hiring of Antiques Roadshow regular Alasdair Nichol to head the Freeman’s fine paintings department.
While Freeman’s has now grown to become a premier regional auction house with both buyers and consignors spanning the globe, the primary driving force behind the company’s success remains a commitment to one-on-one relationships with its clients. Consignors can rely upon expert cataloguing and comprehensive marketing to ensure that top prices are achieved, and buyers can rely upon Freeman’s reputation for integrity and the hands-on guidance provided by the company’s internationally-experienced specialist staff.
Freeman’s is known as the country’s premier auction house for Pennsylvania Impressionists, having established dozens of world records for artists such as Fern Coppedge, Antonio Martino, Roy Nuse and many others. Other world records include top prices for fraktur, redware and other Americana and folk art, as well as for the 20th century master metalworker Samuel Yellin. The annual sales calendar includes sales in Americana, Rare Books and Manuscripts, Couture, English & Continental Furniture and Decorative Arts, Fine Paintings and Sculpture, Fine Prints, Jewelry and Silver, and 20th Century Design.
