James Fletcher, FRICS ASFAV

James started his training in Oakham, Rutland firstly in his father's saleroom and then as articled pupil to Royce's, Auctioneers & Estate Agents, Oakham. After qualifying in 1969 he joined Garrod, Turner & Son, Fine Art Auctioneers, in Ipswich as assistant to

the late Noel Turner. In 1972 he joined Olivers (then known as Boardman & Oliver) as assistant to Ray Emeney the senior partner

responsible for running the Furniture & Fine Art Department and later becoming a Partner in 1980. Following his take-over of the firm in 1993 he has been heard regularly as the “Antiques Expert” for BBC Radio Suffolk .

Sarah Lewis

Sarah Lewis, 32 years old, has a Classics degree from Durham University , a Fine Art Valuation degree from Southampton Institute, and eight years experience working for Dreweatt Neate, Phillips and Bonhams. She is a general valuer, auctioneer and picture specialist. Her most exciting recent discovery was a painting by Henry Moore which subsequently sold for £105,000.

Tony Cribb

Tony Cribb, aged 32, has a degree in The History of Warfare from Wolverhampton University supplemented with five years experience as an arms and armour specialist for Phillips and Bonhams. His particular interest lies with Victorian cavalry swords. His most exciting recent discovery was a collection of armour which realised £70,000.

 

ABOUT US

In the same year Thomas Gainsborough painted his portrait of the famous actor David Garrick (1766), Joseph and William Oliver set up business as Auctioneers and Appraisers in Market Hill, Sudbury.

In 1780 the firm sold furniture belonging to Richard Gardiner (Gainsborough’s brother-in-law) and in 1784 furniture for Mrs.Mary Gibbon (Gainsborough’s sister).

On 16th January 1792 at the Coffee House, Sudbury, William Oliver sold Gainsborough’s House for £350.

THE SALEROOM

Our saleroom is a modern purpose-built auction room with convenient on and off loading facilities and limited parking on site. However, there are a number of free Car Parks (allbeit with limited time) within a short walking distance of the saleroom, and Burkitts Lane is within a few hundred yards of the Market Hill and Town Centre with its shopping, refreshment facilities and access to the famous Gainsborough’s House with its unique collection of paintings and exhibitions. The saleroom is open Monday to Friday, 9am-5pm. Please call the office for an appointment.

TRANSPORT OF GOODS

Collection of goods for sale can be arranged using our own removal van. Charges for this collection can be obtained from the auctioneer’s office.

VALUATIONS

There is no charge made for valuing goods which are to be sold in our saleroom. We are quite happy to visit clients at their property to advise on current auction values. However, if there is no intention to sell through our saleroom a small charge may be made to cover our expenses.

Valuations are carried out for Insurance, Probate and Family Division (Information leaflets detailing charges are available on request).
