Lot 585: FLAUBERT, GUSTAVE Autograph letter signed, single page of a folded sheet of stationery, integral leaf blank, addressed "Cher Maitre"...
November 23, 2015
New York, NY, USALive Auction
Autograph letter signed, single page of a folded sheet of stationery, integral leaf blank, addressed "Cher Maitre" and dated lundi matin 7 h. (but with no other internal dating). 8 1/4 x 5 1/4 inches (20.5 x 13.5 cm); about six lines in French written in black ink. Some lightstain, a one inch separation at central fold on sheet where it was folded for an envelope, just touching signature, with a reversible archival repair to verso (and other archival repairs to the main fold). Framed with a portrait.
The letter begins "Helas, cher maitre, mardi je serais à Croisset! [i.e. his house there]; as a consequence he will not be able to shake his correspondent's hand or thank him again. An old note on the frame indicated that this note was to Hugo; though this is eminently possible, it should be noted that Flaubert did use "Cher maitre" to various recipients.
