0 Canadian Art PAUL PEEL (1860-1892) CABBAGE FIELD, BRITTANY signed and dated "1890" oil on canvas 26.7 by 40.6 cm. 10.5 by 16 in. Paul Peel was a prodigy as an artist. Between his birth in London, Ontario, in 1860, and his premature death in Paris in 1892, not yet thirty-two, he vaulted into the front ranks of the international salons and exhibitions of Europe. He was the first Canadian artist so honoured and his short career was remarkably productive. Peel's style, while brilliant, followed academic, late Victorian sentiments in subject matter, and ignored the swelling numbers of artists who found inspiration instead in the work of the Impressionists and their immediate followers. Nevertheless, he far outshone other academic painters with his exceptional technique and his shrewd ability to borrow some aspects of Impressionism without forsaking his essentially conservative stance Cabbage Field, Brittany is possibly the painting of the same title sold at the Oliver Coate & Co. sale of Peel's paintings in Toronto, October 13-15, 1890, Lot 35 and was likely, therefore, painted in Canada. Peel attended the sale with his artist friends, George Reid and Frederick Bell-Smith. PROVENANCE: Private Collection, Willowdale Private Collection, Toronto
