(1789) George Washington Inaugural Button, "Long Live The President" with Chain of States Type, Albert WI-4A, with Original Shank, Choice Extremely Fine or better.
Rarity-6 for type. Very Rare. 34mm. This major design type being one of the most interesting and collectible of all George Washington Inaugural Buttons. A 13 Linked Chain forms the outer border with each of the individual 13 Links of having an abbreviation for one of the original 13 United States. Decorative and stylish cursive initials, "G W" (George Washington) appear at center, surrounded by the inscription, "LONG LIVE THE PRESIDENT." The inscription is raised up, while the rest of the button's design and lettering are all incuse. In this variety the space around the inscription has a slightly pebbled pattern. Its original shank is fully intact and is straight, as made, on the back. The letters in the lower left linked rings are just lightly worn. Overall, this button is a natural medium chestnut brown brass in color. Another nice example of this button in choice condition sold in the Stack's January 21, 2003 sale for $7,250 (hammer price). Rarely are examples seen with such pleasing eye appeal and in this highly attractive quality.
