(1789) George Washington Inaugural Button with "LONG LIVE THE PRESIDENT" and Central Block Text "G W"
(1789) George Washington Inaugural Button, "LONG LIVE THE PRESIDENT" with Central "G W" in Block Text Letters, Albert WI-11A, Choice Near Mint.
34mm. This major design type of George Washington Inaugural Button has both inscriptions in raised letters, within a recess. The block letters "G W" being George Washington's initials, are spaced close together. Within both inscription block recesses, the background space has a slight pebble surface design, instead of being smooth. This specimen is in marvelous, choice Near Mint condition with its original shank fully intact and straight. The surfaces are smooth and defect free, having a highly attractive natural mellow golden-brass color with underlying luster. Every detail is sharp and distinct. Another example of this Inaugural Button type in choice condition, sold in the Stack's January 21, 2003 sale for $7,250 (hammer price). An Extremely Fine example of this type sold for $6,325 in an American Numismatics Rarities Auction in of March of 2007. This current example is significantly superior to both and should be considered virtually unimproveable in quality.
