Outstanding 1797 Dated General George Washington Wax Portrait Wearing His Military Uniform Shadow Box Framed
1797-Dated Federal Period, Decorative General George Washington Wax Portrait, Wearing His Military Uniform, Signed in wax and dated by the artist, G. Rouse, Custom Shadow Box Framed, Extremely Fine.
Rectangular white wax relief bust shows Washington looking left wearing uniform and ribbon in hair. Signed in bust "G. Rouse". Below bust written "General George Washington 1797". This superb large Wax Portrait is titled, "Gen. George Washington" and it is dated "1797" and also Signed by the artist, "G. Rouse". The detail is quite good and we are amazed at the delicacy of the shirt ruffles and ribbon that adorns the General's wig. It measures 8" x 10" and is housed in a 12" x 14" shadow box frame. There is a hairline crack that extends through the lower right-hand corner and part of the aforementioned ribbon. Wax portraits were quite popular in the 18th and early 19th century. This example is perhaps the finest one we have seen, having excellent crisp details and a wonderful overall appearance. Of museum quality and ready to hang on display.
