Post-Revolutionary War to Civil War
1807 State of New York Military Appointment Document
April 28th, 1807-Dated, Partly-Printed Document Signed, by Governor "Morgan Lewis," State of New York, Military Appointment, Choice Fine.
This is an original Military Commission where New York Governor Morgan Lewis appoints John Hoover, as Ensign in Lieutenant-Colonel Alijah Putnam's Jefferson County Militia. It measures 17" x 11" with expected folds, slight outer edge splits and some light scattered light tone, all mostly at the fold intersections. An embossed circular New York State Seal with "EXCELSIOR" at lower left. In addition to serving as New York's Governor, Morgan Lewis was also an officer in both the American Revolutionary War and the War of 1812. This is a nice item for display being well printed in deep black on early wove period paper. A very scarce, early New York military form.
General Frederick Townsend was a Union Army General during the Civil War.
