1816 HANDWRITTEN LEGAL CONTRACT.
Dated February 5th, 1816 in St. Louis, a signed contract describing Edward Hempstead, Missouri''s first US Congressional delegate, as the legal representative of the Sarpy brothers, and the sum they were to pay him upon successful litigation of their suit against the US for depriving them of trade with the Osage Indians.
"Whereas I have certain claim for presentation to the Congress of the United States for the damages for being deprived of the trade with the Osage Indians. I do hereby agree to pay Edward Hempstead the one fourth part of what I may receive or obtain from the Government of the United States, in consideration of his levies in this business -- With my hand thus --- J. B. Sarpy, G. Sarpy."
