Falls Church, VA, USALive Auction
Description: [Western Hemisphere] Western Hemisphere map with printed and hand drawn elements, labeled "George Williams" and "Christmas 1849." Continents and islands appear to be hand drawn in ink with gilt embellishment on a pre-printed template of heavy card stock paper. Several discrepancies date the piece and include: Alaska is labelled "Russia America," which is consistent with 1849 map date. Alaska was known as Russia America until 1867. Boston is placed between Chesapeake and Charleston; the Great Lakes are omitted and "Michigan" is added in its place. The Hawaiian islands, including "Bird Island" or Nihoa, are incorrectly ordered, with Oahu being closer to the mainland than Maui and the North Pacific Ocean is incorrectly labelled as the North Atlantic. Texas was admitted into the US as the 28th state in Dec. 1845; map shows pre-annexation boundaries. In original gilt and wood frame with later glass, map 11 ½ x 14 in., frame 18 1/2 x 20 in. Map slightly toned, surface soiled in places, esp. at bottom.
