Garden City, NY, USALive Auction
Description: 1866 Treasure Recovery Prospectus of Frigate Hussar Company. 9" x 6". About Uncirculated. A remarkable document that relates to the Nov. 25th, 1780 sinking of the British vessel Hussar in the East River near Randall's Island. Her crew, sixty-seven American prisoners of war, and 580,000 pounds sterling went down with her. Attempts were made to reach the wreck in 1794 and 1819. In 1848 a cannon, cannon balls, manacles, human bones and pottery were recovered, but no gold or silver. The prospectus in this lot anticipated raising the treasure over two seasons, but this was never achieved. The exact location of the Hussar is unknown today. It could possibly be under the foundations of some massive modern building built on filled-in waterfront land. Est. $120
