Description: 1911 Indian Motorcycle
Chassis no. 44D 746
During the early days of the 20th century, Indian was one of the country's leaders in motorcycles. Built by the Hendee Manufacturing Company in Springfield, Massachusetts to a design by toolmaker Oscar Hedstrom, testing began in 1901. Sales totaled 143 for 1902 and a Vee Twin was added in 1907.
The motorcycle on offer uses the Hedstrom-designed single-cylinder engine in a steel frame. The only spring in this Indian's step came from the small measure of springing in the front fork and the springs included in the saddle assembly.
A totally original 1911 Indian, this bike has never been restored and retains its factory paint and original leather saddle, luggage rack, canister acetylene headlamp and accessory tool bag. When he was in high-school in the 1960s, David Wiglesworth frequently rode the old Indian and remembers it as running really well.
Though it hasn't been run in several years, there is no reason to think that it won't spring to life with oil, fresh fuel and a strong kick-start.
