October 29, 2016
Memphis, TN, USALive Auction
It was big news when on March 24, 1958, the rising young star, Elvis Presley was inducted into the Army after the date was deferred from January 20 by the Memphis draft board so that Elvis could complete his obligation to Paramount and finish the filming of King Creole. It was a time of worry and panic for both Elvis' young fans who hated to see him go and for Elvis himself who was worried about being out of the limelight for two years. One young fan named Barbara had the smart insight to capture her idol's signature on her "Elvis' Golden Records" album cover during his four days at Fort Chaffee, Arkansas, after leaving Memphis with fellow recruits on their way to Fort Hood in Texas. Elvis pens "To Barbara from Elvis Presley" in a beautiful blue inked script in the upper left corner of the back cover. Barbara smartly saved her "Bill of Sale" which is also included with the record and lists the "Item Sold" as "Elvis Presley original autographed Gold Records Volume 1 LP signed to Barbara at Fort Chaffee, AR in March 1958." The record was released on March 21, 1958, just three days before Elvis' Army induction. The record sleeve presented here does indeed have "thirty-one grueling 'takes'" text in the first column of the liner notes on the reverse which distinguishes it from future releases when the text was changed to "several rehearsal 'takes'." This difference is important in confirming that the offered sleeve is from the original release available at the time. The album and record have been framed in a stunning visual display that measures approximately 18 by 27 inches (45.72 by 68.58 cm). The framed, signed record album is accompanied by a letter of authenticity from Graceland Authenticated.
Condition Report: The record and sleeve are in lovingly used condition, with the sleeve being separated front from back. Framing has cleaned up that issue for presentation. Very Good condition with minor discoloration along bottom edge that is partially obscured by matting and doesnât distract in any way from overall visual appeal.
