October 29, 2016
Memphis, TN, USALive Auction
Blue Hawaii, the musical romantic comedy, starred Elvis as Chadwick Gates, a man just returning from the Army to his home in Hawaii. Producer Hal Wallis wanted to show what life was like for servicemen when they returned. The soundtrack for Blue Hawaii spent 20 weeks at number one on the Billboard pop album charts and was nominated for a Grammy for Best Soundtrack from a Motion Picture in 1961. Offered is the tiki mug that was originally designed for Tiki Bob's in San Francisco, a pioneering restaurant and cocktail lounge bringing all things Polynesian to the mainland in the late '50s and early '60s. The Colonel adopted the cup and had it customized as a promotional tool that was used at the 1961 Theatre Owners Association (T.O.A.) convention in New Orleans. The tiki mug still has its original "Ucagco Ceramics Japan" sticker on the bottom. The mug comes with an original movie program for Blue Hawaii with Elvis on the blue cover flanked by multiple swimsuit- and lei-clad, ukulele-playing and singing beauties. The black-and-white interior pages contain articles on Elvis and the lucky ladies that co-starred in the movie with him. Still considered a classic today, Blue Hawaii had the island spirit captured perfectly in these collectible tokens. The height of the cup is approximately 8 1/2 inches (21.59 cm) and the diameter is 2 3/4 inches (6.98 cm); the program measures 11 by 8 1/2 inches (27.94 x 21.59 cm). The tiki mug and movie program are accompanied by a letter of authenticity from Graceland Authenticated.
Condition Report: The tiki shows only minor signs of wear with minimal scuffing in the brown areas. An unusually high-grade example. Excellent to Mint condition. The program shows moderate signs of wear with corner wear and a few scratches and scuffs. Excellent condition.
