Native American, Southwest, northeastern Arizona, Hopi, ca. 20th century CE. A ceremonial gourd dipper, hand-painted with a black-on-white swimming tadpole motif (referencing sperm and hence implying fertility) and on the backside a pyramidal arrangement of tadpole eggs. A wonderful example replete with meaningful iconography. Size: 11.5" L x 5" W at widest point (29.2 cm x 12.7 cm)
