Book Details: This lot includes two bound collections of "The Horticulturist and Journal of Rural Art and Rural Taste. Devoted to Horticulture, Landscape Gardening, Rural Architecture, Botany, Pomology, Entomology, Rural Economy, &c." (both Albany: Published by Luther Tucker, 1848 and 1850), edited by Andrew Jackson Downing, a landscape designer and horticulturalist known as the founder of American landscape architecture (information courtesy of Wikipedia). These volumes include Volume II: July 1847 through June 1848, and Volume IV: July 1849 through June 1850.
Condition / Notes: These antique volumes, measuring 7.25" by 9.25", are bound in half leather with marbled paper-covered boards, four raised bands, gilt ruling to the leather panels, and gilt lettering and decoration to the spines. The gilt lettering to Volume II is faded, and the volumes display rubbing to covers and edges. The hinges of Volume II are cracked, and the binding of Volume IV is sound. Each volume shows two bookplates to the front paste-down. The endpapers and blank pages at the front and rear of these volumes display foxing and moisture, and occasional moisture and foxing continue to be visible in the volumes' interiors. Each issue bound in to these periodical collections has its own frontispiece, as well as textual and full-page illustrations depicting rural architecture, design plans, and plants, especially flowers and fruits. One frontispiece in Volume II displays an abrasion. Each volume contains indices.
