Lot 323: 323. White Stone Cast Collie Dog Statue
December 3, 2016
Graham, NC, USALive Auction
Description: The stone castle had stood in the woods of the mid-west refinery town since the twenties. With the passing of each decade it fell into more disrepair. The rumors and fables that surrounded the mysterious structure were numerous. Only accessible by walking the old railroad trestle, there were hundreds of dares and challenges of the local teens over the years to explore and hopefully catch a glimpse of the wife "ghost." The most consistent rumor about the castle was that a doctor built it for his young wife in the twenties and when she met an early demise, he became a recluse and eventually disappeared. The couple had owned two collies that guarded the castle in the day. They also had numerous concrete yard sculptures, Roman columns and urns around the moat. Where the draw bridge opened, there sat two cement collies, one on each side. One was black, one was white. According to local lore, they represented good and evil. There names? Angel and Satan. The last survivors of the old mysterious castle of Wood River, Illinois. They are being sold separate, but we would suggest keeping them together to keep the "peace." Each stands 32" tall to the tip of the ear.
