Lot 7206: 3Pcs Chinese Propaganda PORCELAIN OBJECTS Chairman Mao Portraits Hammer Sickle Flag Poetry Cultural Revolution 1960s Landscape Ceramic Art
November 27, 2016
Freeville, NY, USALive Auction
Details: These three (3) Chinese porcelain pieces are rare and historically significant souvenirs of the "Great Proletarian Cultural Revolution," an upheaval unique in world history. Instigated by Mao Zedong in 1967 to revive what he perceived as flagging revolutionary ardor, it caused one of the world's oldest cultures to turn violently against its own heritage. Many people exploited the chaotic environment to settle personal scores. High-ranking Communist Party officials and intellectuals in particular were demonized, many being sent to the countryside for "re-education," and many being murdered. The worst excesses were finished by 1972, but the movement continued in reduced form until 1976.
These pieces feature color halftone transfer images accentuated with hand-painting. The large circular object measures approx. 11" high and features a portrait of Mao superimposed over a hammer and sickle flag, along with other text and pictorial elements on verso. The two rectangular placards measure approx. 8" high and feature calligraphic poetry by Mao above traditional mountainous landscape scenes and subtly colored floral decorative elements.
