Book Details: From the Preface: "The three volumes which I now publish contain an account of the discovery of the New World, and of the progress of the Spanish arms and colonies there . . . As the principles and maxims of the Spaniards in planting colonies, which have been adopted in some measure by every nation, are unfolded in this part of my work; it will serve as a proper introduction to the history of all the European establishments in America, and convey such information concerning this important article of policy, as may be deemed no less interesting than curious."
Condition / Notes: This three-volume antique set is bound in full leather, with gilt ornamentation to the covers, gilt lettering and decoration to the spines, and dentelles. The front board of Volume I is separating. The volumes display moderate external wear, with rubbing and vertical cracking to spine edges. The rear hinge of the first volume is cracked, and the front hinge of the second volume is weakened. The text blocks are sound, adorned with marbled edges. Light offsetting is very occasionally visible to the pages, but the interiors are otherwise bright and clean, with numerous fold-out maps and plates. A fold-out map in the first volume includes the Gulf of Mexico and the Caribbean. The third volume contains an index.
