Description: Four (4) Signed East TN Documents, inc. 2 Major James Sevier. 1st item: Major James Sevier signed sheriff summons order with handwritten text stating "State of Tenne[s]see To the Sheriff of Washington County you are commanded to take the body of Francis Shaw and Samuel Shaw if in Your County and them safely keep so that you have them before the Justices of our next County Court...to be held in Jonesbourgh for the County of Washington on the first Monday in February next. Then and there to answer Michael Harri[s]son of a plea...to his Damages four Hundred Dollars...the first Monday in November 1798...23rd of January 1799 James Sevier Clerk" with later addition below. Summary of summons and additional signature of John Kennedy en verso. Float mounted in a contemporary wooden frame. Sheet - 13 1/8" H x 8 1/4" W. Framed - 16 1/4" H x 11 1/2" W. Late 18th century. 2nd item: Major James Sevier signed summons order with handwritten and printed text stating "State of Tennessee, To the Sheriff of Washington County, Greeting. YOU are hereby commanded to take the body of Leonard Cash if in your county and him safely keep, so that you have him before the Justices of our next county court of pleas and quarter sessions, to be held for the county of Washington at the court-house in Jonesboro [sic] on the first Monday in May next, then and there to answer George House of a plea of Debt...herein fail not and have them there this writ [sic], witne[s]s James Sevier clerk of our said court at office the first Monday in February 1803 Jas. Sevier Clerk" with later addition below. Float mounted in a contemporary wooden frame. Sheet - 13 3/8" H x 7 3/4" W. Framed - 16 1/2" H x 11 1/4" W. Washington County, TN, early 19th century. Biography (courtesy of Daughters of the American Revolution) Major James Sevier was born in Augusta County, VA, and was present at the Battle of King's Mountain at the age of sixteen. He followed his father Governor John Sevier in other military engagements and died in Washington County, TN. 3rd item: Robert Rhea Preston (1791-1872) signed sheriff summons order with handwritten text stating "State of Tennessee to any lawful officer to execute Sullivan County...summons William F. Butter and Jacob Merchant to appear before me or some Justice for said County to answer John A. McKinley in a plea of debt due by note given under my hand and seal this 13th of January 1843...Robt P Rhea (seal) J. Peace" with later addition below. Housed in a contemporary wooden frame. Sheet - 4 3/4" H x 7 1/2" W. Framed - 9 3/4" H x 12 1/4" W. Sullivan County, TN, mid 19th century. Biography (courtesy Genealogy.com) Preston was born in Bluff City, Sullivan County, TN, and was educated at Princeton. He was a veteran of the War of 1812 and was a teacher who tutored Thomas Jonathan "Stonewall" Jackson for West Point, as recorded on his gravestone in Pleasant Grove Cemetery, Sullivan County, TN. 4th item: Captain James Penny (b. 1765) signed sheriff summons order with handwritten text stating "State of Tennessee Greene County Be it remembered that on the 19th of August 1791 came personally before me James Penny, Esq. a Justice of the Peace for said County, Abraham Hall, Shedrick McNew & James Magee and acknowledge themselves severally I[n]debted to the said State...Superior Court of Law to be held for the District of Washington at Jonesboro [sic] on [the] third Tuesday in September, to answer...in the stealing of one Gilding the property of [William] McCloud...James Penny JD". Housed in a contemporary wooden frame. Sheet - 12" H x 7 3/8" W. Framed - 17 2/4" H x 13 3/4" W. Greene County, TN, late 18th century. Biography (courtesy of the Hamilton County Tennessee Genealogy Society) James Penny was born in North Carolina and was a Captain in the Tennessee Militia from 1796-1811. Your bid is a contract: In bidding on any lot offered, the bidder indicates acceptance of these Terms and Conditions of Sale. Title of each lot passes when the auctioneer says, "Sold". The bidder is responsible for knowing on which item(s) he or she is bidding. If unsure, the bidder should inquire, or not bid. When becoming the winning bidder at auction, you have affected a contract and will be expected to pay for items in which you were evidenced to be the successful bidder. After the item is sold, any loss by fire, theft, breakage, or any other cause is the sole responsibility of the purchaser. Merchandise must be packed and transported by the purchaser at his own risk and expense.
Taxes: All purchases are subject to 9.25% Tennessee sales tax unless the Tennessee Department of Revenue Blanket Certificate of Resale form is completed and provided, along with a copy of the resale certificate from your state and received prior to time of purchase. International buyers are responsible for tariffs, taxes, or assessments of shipped items to the buyer's country.
